Kids from ages 8-12 attended our annual "Dental Camp" in August. There were four 'stations' teaching different concepts and skills.
At station one, kids took impressions of their lips and then these were poured into stone.
At station two, they took an x-ray of a chicken bone and then developed it in the x-ray processor.
Station three was the oral hygiene station. We had them don lab jackets and gloves and disclose each other's teeth, looking for plaque. This was pretty hilarious as the kids were laughing as they learned to use the air-water syringe and the suction. Needless to say, a lot of water got squirted and not always in the patient's mouth!
Station four was the popular 'drill and fill' station. The kids actually used dental handpieces to drill into real human teeth that were mounted in small plaster cups. After making their 'cavity preparation', they mixed silver amalgam filling material in a titurator and packed and carved it in the tooth. It amazed us to see how meticulous these little campers were - they did some fine work!
One participant, Kayla R., said,"This is my second time and I'm planning on coming next year."
Gabe C. said, "This was a lot of fun, thanks for inviting me!"
